Summary:

We are searching for an Ultrasound Specialist – someone who works well in a fast-paced setting. In this position, you’ll perform exceptional quality routine and specialized pediatric Ultrasound procedures at the request licensed independent practitioner for interpretation by radiologists. The Specialist integrates scientific knowledge; technical skills, patient interaction and compassionate care resulting in diagnostic information, and recognizes patient conditions essential for successful completion of the procedure. The Specialist must demonstrate a detailed understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology and medical terminology. They must possess, utilize, maintain and enhance knowledge of radiation safety and protection for self, patients and others. The Specialist prepares, administers and document activities related to mediations in accordance with state regulations and institution policy. The Specialist is a liaison between patients, radiologist and other members of the support team. The Specialist must think critically, use independent, professional and ethical judgment in all aspects of their work, and they must engage in continuing education to include their area of practice to enhance patient care, public education, knowledge and technical competence. They are responsible for patient care, appropriate documentation, quality control, and quality improvement, and they provide training, education and mentoring to students, technologists, nursing, residents, fellows, staff and others.

Responsibilities :

  • Assesses factors that may contraindicate the procedure; such as, medication contraindications, patient risk for reaction to medications, patient history, laboratory results, insufficient patient preparation or artifacts
  • Based on order, determines type and dose of contrast agent to be administered based on patient’s age, weight and medical/physical status
  • Provides information to patients, health care providers, students and the public concerning the role and responsibilities of individuals in the profession
  • Working independently performs routine and complex, STAT, urgent, on-call and potentially intraoperative Ultrasound cases, while accurately demonstrating understanding of anatomy and pathology through proper imaging techniques
  • Follows fall precautions, isolation standards and universal precautions 100% of the time
  • Recognizes examination findings that may require immediate clinical response and notifies the interpreting radiologist
  • Applies patient safety principles during all aspects of Ultrasound procedures, including assisting and transporting patients
  • Evaluates images to determine technical acceptability. Ensure proper identification and markings are appropriately recorded
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement, collects data and implements resolutions in accordance with departmental guidelines
  • Positions self in challenging situations and responds with confidence, professionalism, and accuracy in the face of multiple demands and shifting priorities
  • Network, coordinate activities, become a sought after contact person within the working group
  • During system failure, performs downtime procedures and immediately reports to leadership for reassignment of duties


Qualifications:

  • Graduate of a formal diagnostic Radiology program
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) awarded by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography

  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer - Obstetrics and Gynecology (RDMS-OB/GYN)
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer - Pediatric Echocardiography (RDMS-PE)
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer - Vascular Technology (RDMS-VT)
  • Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT)
  • Registered in Musculoskeletal Sonography (RMSK)
  • From the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT):
  • Registered Technologist Vascular Sonography: R.T. (VS)
  • Registered Technologist Breast Sonography: R.T. (BS)
  • Three (3) years of Ultrasound experience (Preferably pediatric ultrasound experience)
  • Broad knowledge of ultrasound physics and procedures; understanding of ultrasound principles that are developmentally appropriate for ages 0 – adulthood
  • Operation of all required equipment including troubleshooting when necessary of the equipment, including automated processors, copying/digitizing film equipment, R.I.S., and PACS
  • Basic life support and medical terminology understanding is required
  • Must be articulate, courteous and supportive in dealing with patients, parents, nursing, faculty, administrative and departmental personnel so that excellent customer service and positive guest relations are achieved
  • Must honor confidentiality and independently scan patients by following the established protocols
  • Must utilize basic office equipment; such as fax
  • Preferable if able to demonstrate bilingual skills

 

Internal Promotion Requirements:

 

  • Specialist candidate must have been rated as “exceeds” or “consistently exceeds” on the previous performance appraisal and must have demonstrated productivity per department standards for previous 12 months.
  • Specialist candidate must have completed at least one performance improvement project, as approved by the manager, in the previous 12 months. Project must be presented to department management team. This requirement will be waived with Six Sigma LEAN Belt, Green Belt or Black Belt Certification for internal or in-hire candidates.
  • Specialist candidate must not have been on disciplinary or corrective action during the 12 months preceding the promotion
