We are searching for our next Coding Specialist—someone who can thrive in a fast-paced hospital setting. In this position, you’ll assign ICD-9-CM and CPT codes to inpatient, same day surgery, observation, ER and/or ambulatory records. We need someone who can generate codes for the purposes of billing and research, and to provide information to government and regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities :

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assigns ICD-9-CM and CPT codes and generates DRG codes with 97% accuracy
  • Reviews and interprets documentation patient medical records to appropriately assign diagnosis and procedure codes
  • Reviews patient charges to determine necessary coding to complete the account
  • Identifies principle and secondary diagnoses as well as procedure codes from the electronic medical record and/or paper record
  • Utilizes the encoder to generate ICD-9-CM and CPT codes for diagnosis and procedures
  • Completes abstracts for records is appropriate with 97% accuracy
  • Checks discharge disposition and attending physician for correctness
  • Completes neonatal information regarding birth weight, gestational age, TPN, ECMO and number of ventilator days
  • Assists in correction of problem accounts
  • Identifies incorrect admit/discharge dates
  • Identifies incorrect patient type
  • Provides ICD-9 and CPT codes for Business Services and physician office requests regarding non-billed or non-reimbursed claims
  • Reviews charts for completeness
  • Participates in Coding Roundtable
  • Assists in auditing records
  • Maintains concurrent coding for inpatient records.

Assigns diagnosis and procedure codes for patients in-house



  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • At least one of the following credentials: Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT), Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
  • Four (4) years of experience in coding
  • Experience using an encoder is preferred
  • Experience using an electronic medical record is preferred
  • Knowledge of coding guidelines, anatomy and physiology, biology and microbiology, pharmacology, medical terminology and abbreviations
  • Verbal and written communication, organizational, typing (35-45 wpm) and data entry skills
  • Ability to identify physician signatures and interpret physician notes accurately in order to assign correct codes in a timely manner
