Innovative Imaging: Radiology Technologists at the Forefront of Pediatric Care
Radiology technologists across Texas Children’s Hospital play a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of our patients using advanced imaging technology. But their work is not just about technology—it’s also about helping to provide the best outcomes for patients. Blending innovation and heart, these professionals are The Difference, helping to shape healthier futures for the children for whom we care.
For those considering a career as a radiology tech, our North Austin Campus offers an incredible opportunity to be part of a collaborative team in the vanguard of medical technology. Two members of our radiology team, Benjamin Conti, an advanced X-ray specialist, and Stephanie Hernandez, a radiology nurse, share what makes this career path and working at Texas Children’s so rewarding.
The Evolution of Radiology and Imaging Techniques
Radiology has undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years, evolving from the days of manual processes to an era where digital imaging techniques take center stage. For Benjamin, this shift is one of the most exciting aspects of his job.
“Radiology has come a long way since I started,” Benjamin says. “We’ve moved from film to digital, and now we’re exploring AI to improve accuracy. Technology has made everything faster and safer for patients, especially kids.”
More than just imaging equipment operators, radiology techs are essential contributors to patient care, ensuring that the best technology is used to support accurate diagnoses and effective treatments. The implementation of innovations like the EOS low-dose X-ray machine allows techs like Benjamin and Stephanie to provide high-quality imaging with reduced radiation exposure. This is particularly important for pediatric patients with complex conditions.
“Radiology is at the forefront of medicine,” Stephanie remarks. “We’re doing less invasive procedures, and we’re getting kids in and out quickly with fewer side effects.” She believes radiology is an exciting opportunity for any nurse who, like her, loves innovation and technology.
Benjamin’s Path to Radiology and Austin
Benjamin’s journey into radiology wasn’t a straight line. He initially pursued computer engineering before realizing his true passion lay in healthcare. Sixteen years later, he’s now a leader in North Austin, where he coordinates a team of radiology techs to ensure our patients receive the highest level of care.
“I started off in computer engineering, but I knew I wanted to do something in the medical field. I love technology, and radiology just made sense for me,” Benjamin shares. “What I love about being on this team is that I’m not just in one spot—I work across different areas of the hospital. It keeps me on my toes.”
For Benjamin, who relocated from our Houston-area campus in The Woodlands, being part of the Texas Children’s radiology team in Austin means staying on the leading edge of healthcare innovation while also fostering a strong culture of teamwork. “Our team in Austin is amazing. We’re all about communication and camaraderie. It’s a strong culture whether you’re in Houston or Austin, and that’s what makes Texas Children’s special.”
Stephanie’s Nursing Expertise Meets Radiology
After seven years as a pediatric ER nurse, Stephanie Hernandez was looking for a change when she discovered a new path in radiology. Stephanie’s nursing expertise gives her a unique perspective on patient care, which she brings to her new role in our North Austin Campus cardiac catheterization laboratory, or Cath lab.
“As a nurse, I’m focused on the patient as a whole, not just a specific procedure,” Stephanie explains. “I’m thinking critically about how that procedure affects everything else—medications, implants and overall health.”
In her current role, she’s had to be adaptable and learn many new procedures related to interventional radiology (IR), the Cath lab, neuro-interventional radiology (neuro-IR), and electrophysiology (EP). “Covering four different modalities in one department is unique,” she says. “We’re currently the only department that does that in the hospital. It’s challenging, but it’s also exciting because I get to learn so much.”
This holistic approach to patient care is one of the many reasons Stephanie loves working in radiology. “Radiology is so much more than just X-rays,” she says. “It’s an exciting field, and I’m constantly learning something new. We work with some of the smartest physicians, and the procedures we do provide important diagnostic information, meaning better outcomes for our pediatric patients.”
Life as a Radiology Tech at Texas Children’s Hospital – North Austin
At our North Austin Campus, radiology technologists work in various settings across the hospital and no two days are the same as they engage with a variety of people and equipment. The dynamic nature of their work requires a high level of adaptability and teamwork.
“A typical day for me involves knowing the schedule, coordinating radiologists and jumping in to help where I’m needed.” Benjamin explains. “Whether it’s orthopedic or the operating room, I’m making sure our hospital departments are covered, and everything runs smoothly.”
For Stephanie, the variety and purpose in her work are the most compelling aspects of her job. “Coming from the ER, I loved the fast pace. But, in radiology, I get to see the full picture. My team sees a lot of recurring patients, and I get to follow up with them, see their progress and know I’ve made a difference in their lives. That’s the most rewarding part.”
Both Benjamin and Stephanie agree that working with pediatric patients presents its own set of unique challenges, but it’s also deeply fulfilling. “One case I’ll never forget involved a severely dehydrated child who came in through the ER,” Benjamin recalls. “I could see the difference we made—helping him bounce back from a tough situation. That’s why I do what I do and, as a dad myself, it’s especially meaningful.”
Stephanie echoes this sentiment, sharing a memorable experience from her time in neuro-IR. “We had a little girl with a stenosis in her brain, and our neuro-IR doctor went in to open up the area. Within days, she was already showing signs of improvement—making noises and showing more cognition than before. It was life-changing for her and her family.”

When the opportunity came up, I knew I wanted to be here.” He appreciates the balance of a vibrant city with a more laid-back atmosphere compared to Houston.
Stephanie, who comes from a military family and grew up near the Austin area, shares her love for the city’s outdoor lifestyle: “I’m a runner, and I love all the trails and parks around Austin.
