We are searching for a Lactation Consultant – someone who works well in a fast-paced hospital setting. In this position, you will provide support and instruction to mother/infant dyads with breastfeeding needs/lactation problems in a manner developmentally appropriate for adolescents and adults as necessary.
Think you’ve got what it takes?
· Instructs mothers (adolescents and adults) on all tasks necessary to initiate and maintain lactation during the infant’s hospitalization; may include prenatal instruction and post-discharge follow-up
· Evaluates breastfeeding oral motor mechanics of infants and milk transfer making appropriate recommendations and management strategies
· Communicates the information obtained from maternal and infant observation and evaluation, collaborates with health care team for development and ongoing modification of plan of care
· Identifies patient response to care provided and collaborates with health care team to assure achievement of desired patient outcome
· Serves as an expert resource to departments and staff throughout the facility to ensure knowledge of, and adherence to, hospital policies and procedures related to human milk collection, storage, transport and feeding
· Represents department and self as a liaison to patients/families, visitors, peers and other health care team members.
· Displays good judgment when interacting with others and demonstrates positive and effective interpersonal skills
· Demonstrates willingness and ability to acquire new knowledge, demonstrate new skills needed to improve individual, team, and organizational performance
· Expert knowledge of the physiologic and social sciences to breastfeeding and lactation
· Bachelor’s or associate’s degree in nursing, or technical diploma in nursing with acceptance or current enrollment in BSN program and signed agreement
· Current licensure with the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas
· Two (2) years of experience working in lactation specialized program or Five (5) years of experience in OB, postpartum/mother-baby or NICU care
· Certified or eligible to certify within 1 year of hire by the International Board of Lactation Consultation Examiners (IBCLC certification)
· Excellent communication skills
· Use critical thinking to critique the findings from the physiologic and social sciences and evaluate their applicability to clinical management issues
· Ability to organize and time manage job tasks effectively
· Effective at building collaborative relationships
