We are searching for a Director of Risk Management & Senior Risk Counsel -- someone who works well in a fast-paced setting. In this position, you will design, implement, and oversee system-wide processes for risk identification and reduction of safety events in collaboration with departments across the organization. This position also serves as legal counsel to the organization's leadership, physicians and employees on risk issues and litigation matters. You will provide direction and oversight to claims management activities and implement complex litigation strategies.

Responsibilities :

  • Directs the Risk Management program of the organization including potential claims brought against the organization
  • Conducts bi-monthly legal analysis of patient care events for determination of potential claim status, monthly legal analysis of general liability events for determination of potential claim status, and monthly legal analysis of EPLI events for determination of potential claim status
  • Provides legal counsel to our organization for risk management issues and litigation matters
  • Provides legal analysis and advice on patient care issues, CPS and custody issues; advises on evidentiary matters specifically related to peer review privilege, hospital committee privilege, and other privileged matters.
  • Directs and oversees claims management and litigation strategies
  • Hires outside counsel, as needed, to represent our company in litigation matters, court hearings, and depositions
  • Ensures that Joint Commission requirements specific to each department are fulfilled but also understand the linkage between Risk Management, Emergency Management & Business Continuity, and Environmental Health & Safety departments’ requirements and those of our organization


  • JD degree from an ABA accredited law school required
  • License to practice law in the state of Texas required
  • If candidate does not have a Texas law license, they must have and maintain a license to practice law in another state and get licensed in the state of Texas within 18 months of hire
  • 7 years’ investigation and claims management and/or legal experience, including 1 year of management/supervisory experience required
