For as long as she can remember, Kim Holt has always had a strong work ethic and compassion for others – values instilled by her childhood hero, her mother. In 1992, the diligent care and compassion her family received from the hospital nursing staff during her mother’s unfortunate passing inspired her to pay that kindness forward as she quickly changed career paths. Years before, Kim’s mother gave her a guardian angel lapel pin, and at her nursing school graduation, the faculty pinned it on her to honor both her mother and her accomplishment.
In her words, “I cannot think of a better way to honor my mother than to continue the work I’ve been doing for the last 25 years at Texas Children’s.”
Now an assistant clinical director, Kim sits down with us for this week’s One Amazing Team Spotlight to walk us through her career and her promise for a better Tomorrow, Together.
How did you end up at Texas Children’s?
I knew from the very moment I stepped foot in Texas Children’s I would work here for the rest of my career. The first thing I noticed was the impressive model train display. Minutes later, I met my preceptor and team members, and their attitudes, the care they provided and their concern for my experience as a nursing student, further confirmed Texas Children’s Hospital was exactly where I needed to work as soon as I graduated. I just fell in love with the colorful and happy atmosphere, and I’ve been here ever since.
What is a typical day in your current role?
I have been involved in the planning and activation of all Texas Children’s Ambulatory Infusion Centers, including the first one that opened in October 2006. Every chance I get, I visit with staff and patients in clinic and every now and then I get to help with patient care, which is why I enjoy my current role so much!
Tomorrow, Together represents Texas Children’s commitment to creating a bright future for our employees and our mission. What is your commitment for the future?
I will continue to live my definition of leadership, which is to achieve success through teamwork and collaboration by ensuring effective communication, providing guidance and support while promoting accountability, managing operations and developing efficient processes that result in safe, high-quality patient care and outcomes.
What is next for you in your career?
It has always been my goal to remain at Texas Children’s throughout my entire career. I love Texas Children’s and I have never considered leaving. There are so many different opportunities and options, I never had to look outside these walls for a new challenge. Eventually, I will be honored to be called a Texas Children’s retiree.
